The history of Fruit-Tella candy dates back to 1932 when Dutch confectionery company Van Melle introduced the sweet to the Dutch market. Inspired by the growing popularity of fruit-flavored candy, Van Melle’s confectioners experimented with different recipes and shapes, eventually settling on a square-shaped gummy candy infused with various fruity flavors. The new confection was named after a combination of “fruit” and “tella,” a playful reference to the distinctive square shape.
In the 1950s Van Melle started exporting the candies to several European countries, including the United Kingdom. The company never stopped innovating. New varieties varieties were introduced, such as Fruit-Tella dummy. The traditional candies are still packed in its characteristic square rolls. New flavors were were introduced, but the original strawberry candies are still very popular.
